Beyond Talk

In the midst of the country’s 2020 racial justice movement, the Triad Business Journal spoke with local experts to share their recommendations on how businesses should move forward with diversity and inclusion efforts.

Creating a concept

For the cover, I used a quote from an expert that I thought best-summarized the purpose of the special report. This was a conscious decision to avoid making one person the face of the local racial justice movement.

On the inside, the overall advice from experts came down to companies going “beyond talk” and investing in tangible diversity and inclusion efforts. I illustrated the headline popping out of the speech bubble to represent this concept. I reworked the concept to be used as the social media tease image for the web-version of the report. Using their words

The quote theme was utilized throughout the print package in the form of pull quotes.

Other web elements

The hero image for the story did not need to include the headline, so I took out the words and added quote marks. This was a tie-in from the print cover. I also reformatted the pull quotes from the print version to run in-line with the story.
